The VTT and AI-SEE have released footage of their sensor testing campaign in arctic conditions. The temperature was below -20 ⁰C, and turbulent snow degraded visibility. The test campaign aimed to try the gated camera and LiDAR feasibility to recognise objects in snowy conditions and identify the key challenges. The tested sensing systems are expected to be market ready 2025 – 2030.
The VTT AI-SEE project is developing AI-based algorithms for processing sensor data to eliminate false observations and create a better situational picture for vehicles. In addition, the project continues sensor development for handling in poor road conditions.
AI.SEE project partners are working to improve the system to simulate sensor output under adverse weather realistically and to adapt and test it on artificial data. Engineers will also collect inclement weather data and conduct testing campaigns in real traffic scenarios to ensure an accurate environment perception.
